The holding of presidential and parliamentary elections in Libya is the only way out of the country's ongoing political crisis, stated the Chairman of the Presidential Council of Libya, Mohamed al-Menfi. His remarks came during a joint press conference with Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, following their talks in the Algerian capital. The conference was broadcast on the council’s YouTube channel.
“The resolution of Libya's political crisis lies in holding parliamentary and presidential elections. Any other solutions will not achieve the desired results, as no one but the Libyan people themselves can decide who should represent them and take control of the country,” said al-Menfi. He also expressed his gratitude to the Algerian president for his consistent support of Libya in international forums, as well as for backing the nation's stability and territorial integrity.
The Algerian leader, for his part, expressed hope for “the swift stabilization of Libya.” He emphasized that “the final word belongs to the Libyan people” and that any decision made by them “must be respected by all.” Tebboune also announced that representatives from Algeria, Libya, and Tunisia would soon meet as part of trilateral consultations.
Currently, Libya is effectively governed by two rival administrations: the eastern-based government, approved by the parliament, and the Government of National Unity in Tripoli. The UN-brokered transitional period, which began after the Geneva accords, officially ended on June 22, 2023. This period was meant to culminate in the election of a president and parliament, but the elections initially set for December 2021 were postponed due to a lack of constitutional framework and security concerns surrounding the conduct of national elections.
