Embassy of Azerbaijan in Iran Resumes Operations

15 July

The Azerbaijani Embassy in Iran has reopened, following its suspension after an armed attack in January 2023, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry announced.

"Following negotiations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Azerbaijani Embassy in Iran resumed operations at a new location on July 15, 2024. The ambassador and current embassy staff have returned to Iran," the ministry stated.

The press release noted that Iranian authorities "have implemented appropriate measures to ensure diplomatic security at the new embassy building." The ministry also mentioned that work is underway to organize consular services at the new location, with operations expected to resume in the near future.

The embassy's closure stemmed from a violent incident on January 27, 2023, when an armed attack on the diplomatic mission in Tehran resulted in the death of the head of security and injuries to two other staff members. Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev strongly condemned the attack, labeling it as an act of terrorism and calling for an immediate investigation and punishment of those responsible.

In the aftermath of the attack, 53 embassy employees and their family members were evacuated to Baku on January 29, and the embassy completely suspended its diplomatic activities. In October of the same year, the perpetrator of the armed attack was sentenced to death by Iranian authorities.
