Emomali Rahmon wins Tajik presidential elections

Emomali Rahmon won the election of the head of the republic, the chairman of the Central Election Commission Bakhtiyor Khudoyerzoda said.


"According to preliminary results, the presidential election was won by the incumbent head of state Emomali Rahmon, with 90.92 % of voters or 3.837 million people, with a turnout of 85.39 % or 4.221 million voters," he said after counting 100 % of ballots.

 

 

Five leaders of different political forces run for the post of the president: the incumbent president Rakhmon (the ruling People's Democratic Party), as well as parliamentarians Murodj Abdulloev (Communist Party), Rustam Latifzoda (Agrarian Party), Rustam Rakhmatzoda (Economic Reform Party) and Abduhalim Gafforzoda (Socialist Party).


For Rakhmon, who has headed the country since 1992 (the longest in the post-Soviet space), this is the fifth election. Observers from the CIS, SCO, CSTO, OSCE, State Duma and Sovfed followed the election. No violations were recorded.
