Erdogan: Damascus "increased aggression" in Idlib

21 April 2020

Syrian government forces have "increased their aggression" in Idlib province. This statement was made by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

"The regime of [Syrian President Bashar al-Assad] has increased its aggression in Idlib. If the regime continues to act in this way, it will pay for it with very serious losses, "the Turkish leader said, in particular, expressing his intention to" fight back against aggressive actions, while remaining committed to the agreements with Russia of March 5."

Earlier, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said that Turkey's actions in the North of the Arab Republic expose Ankara's expansionist intentions.

"Turkey does not stop encroaching on Syrian sovereignty and does not fulfill its obligations in accordance with the agreements reached in Astana [now the capital of Kazakhstan Nur-Sultan] and Sochi," he stressed.

Turkey, according to Assad, holds the Northern regions under its occupation and increases the number of observation posts there, which "are actually military bases".

On March 5, Russian and Turkish presidents Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdogan agreed on the ceasefire and a number of other measures aimed at resolving the situation in Idlib. Since March 15, Russia and Turkey have started joint patrols along the Aleppo - Latakia highway (M-4), where it is planned to create a security corridor.
