Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has arrived in Turkey for his first official visit, where he was personally greeted at Ankara airport by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The event was broadcast by TRT Haber TV channel.
According to the Turkish presidential administration, the one-day visit will include the inaugural meeting of the high-level strategic cooperation council between the two countries. The meeting will offer a comprehensive review of Turkish-Egyptian relations and explore joint initiatives to boost bilateral trade from $10 billion to $15 billion annually. Erdogan and el-Sisi are also expected to discuss the resolution of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, along with other regional and global issues. The visit is set to conclude with the signing of approximately 20 bilateral agreements, including some in the military-technical field.
This visit follows Erdogan's first trip to Egypt in 12 years in February 2024, part of the ongoing normalization of relations between the two nations. Diplomatic relations had been strained since 2013, when Egypt's then-President Mohamed Morsi was ousted and Turkey reacted negatively. In March 2021, Turkey's Foreign Ministry announced the resumption of diplomatic contacts with Egypt, and by July 2023, both countries fully restored diplomatic relations by appointing ambassadors in Ankara and Cairo.
