Erdogan plans to hold talks with Putin before Akkuyu nuclear power plant ceremony

26 April 2023

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan wants to hold telephone talks with Russian leader Vladimir Putin before the April 27 nuclear fuel delivery ceremony at the Akkuyu nuclear power plant. Turkish President's spokesman Ibrahim Kalin said this on Wednesday.

"Before the ceremony at the Akkuyu nuclear power plant, President Erdogan will hold telephone talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. They plan to discuss the situation in Ukraine and bilateral relations," the Star newspaper quoted Kalin as saying.

Kalin noted that the military action in Ukraine "continues even though more than a year has passed." "We continue to work. We need to join forces to go to negotiations to prevent [the continuation of] the war. Turkey is ready to play its role as a country that can talk to both Russia and Ukraine," he said. Kalin also noted that this is not just a conflict between Moscow and Kiev, but also a confrontation between Russia and the West.

A ceremony to deliver the first nuclear fuel for the first unit of the Akkuyu nuclear power plant is scheduled for April 27 in Mersin. Putin is expected to participate in the event via videoconference. With the delivery of fuel to the site, the facility will soon officially receive nuclear status.

Akkuyu is the first nuclear power plant under construction in Turkey. The project is being implemented on the basis of an intergovernmental cooperation agreement signed between Russia and Turkey on May 12, 2010.
