Erdogan replaces majority of governors in Turkey

10 August 2023

Governors of 57 out of 81 provinces in Turkey have been replaced by the order of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The corresponding decree from the head of the republic has been published in the official government newspaper, Resmi Gazete.

The reasons for these changes, which excluded Ankara and Istanbul, have not been explicitly stated. Opposition media highlight that this decision comes after meetings of the government and Turkey's National Security Council earlier this week.

On August 2, Erdogan's decree led to the replacement of security chiefs in 52 Turkish provinces. The authorities also did not provide explanations for the majority of these changes in police leadership.
