Turkey's Incumbent President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Tuesday that he expects to win the upcoming May 28 runoff election for head of state and has started preparations for it.
"We fought hard [in the first round] without provocation, without paying attention to pressure, without despair, without giving up in the face of difficulties. We have already begun preparations for May 28. Now it is time to crown the success we achieved on May 14 with an even bigger victory," he wrote on his Twitter page.
The Turkish leader noted that "the second round will take place on May 28 - the day after the 63rd anniversary of the May 27 [1960] coup." "We are an alliance (the ruling People's Alliance - TASS) that has prioritized national will and love to serve the country and the nation. We can only give back to our people, who so far have defended us and defied the tanks when needed, by continuing to work harder," Erdogan pointed out.
May 27, 1960, was the first coup d'état in Turkey since the establishment of the Republic of Turkey in 1923. It was carried out by a group of officers who disobeyed the orders of the high command and succeeded in overthrowing Adnan Menderes' government. The authorities at the time were trying to correct the worsening economic situation of the country and solve social and political problems. Among the grievances against Menderes was his desire to get closer to the Soviet Union. During the current election campaign, Erdogan repeatedly mentioned that period in the country's history, noting the anti-democratic nature of what happened, which resulted in Menderes being sentenced to death and hanged by court order.
