Erdogan stated intent to create gas hub in Turkey in cooperation with Russia

29 May 2023

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he was still determined to implement the gas hub project in the republic, the initiative for which was previously proposed by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"We will further strengthen Turkey's position as an international hub. Actually, Mr. Putin mentioned again the creation of the hub in [the northwestern] Thrace region in Turkey in his congratulatory message. We will do it with them (Russia - TASS). And there will be the hub in Thrace," he said on Monday night as he addressed the citizens at the Bestepe presidential complex in Ankara.

In October 2022, Putin put forward an idea to create a hub in Turkey, where the lost volume of transit through the Nord Stream could be redirected. He explained that he was talking about the possibility of building another pipeline system and creating a center in the republic, through which gas would be delivered to third countries, primarily European countries, if they are interested in it.

Turkey welcomed the initiative and stated that most of the infrastructure for a gas hub and gas trading center was ready in its territory. Ankara also began the process of making legislative changes to provide the legal base of hub operation. The gas trading center is planned to be created in the northwestern part of the republic, This region is called Thrace (according to Turkish tradition - Trakya).
