Erdogan to Discuss Conditions for Resumption of Grain Deal with UN Secretary-General

14 September 2023

The discussions regarding the specific conditions required for the resumption of the grain deal will be a focal point during the anticipated talks between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres scheduled for the high-level week of the General Assembly of the international organization. This information comes from a diplomatic source in Ankara, as reported by TASS.

"Yesterday, the UN secretary-general indicated his intention to hold discussions concerning the grain issue, including talks with Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan. As you may recall, our President has previously expressed the commitment to fulfill the necessary conditions for reestablishing the grain corridor and continuing collaboration with the UN. We anticipate that this meeting in the United States will involve discussions on the precise conditions required for the efficient and prompt reinstatement of the agreement," stated the source speaking to the agency.

He noted that Ankara plans to request the UN to complete the proposals for the Russian Federation regarding the grain deal, outlining the necessary actions. A new letter to the Russian leadership regarding these agreements is also on the agenda.

Erdogan had previously emphasized that, "at this juncture, Western countries must take steps and honor the commitments made by the Russian Federation." This includes aspects like ship insurance and the removal of restrictions in the banking sector. He further emphasized that this matter pertains not only to grain but also encompasses the export of Russian fertilizers, a facet that "should not be underestimated."
