Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan accused the opposition of acting to please the West by promising to revise agreements to build the country's first nuclear power plant, Akkuyu, and defense industry projects if it [the opposition] wins the general election.
"They [the opposition] are greeting the West, which is concerned about the strengthening of our country, with promises to review [the construction project of] the Akkuyu nuclear power plant, projects in the defense industry, public-private partnerships," Erdogan said in parliament, speaking at a faction meeting of the ruling AK Party (AKP), which he heads.
According to the Turkish leader, "the opposition, counting on the West to praise them, welcomes everyone in their dreams, but not their own people."
On January 30, the opposition alliance of six parties announced a program of action in case of victory in the presidential and parliamentary elections scheduled for May 14. One of its points concerns the Akkuyu NPP construction project, the first nuclear power plant in Turkey, which is being implemented with Russia's participation. At the presentation of the program, Feridun Bilgin, a representative of the alliance's Future Party, told reporters that the opposition promises to review "the current state and details of the agreement concerning the Akkuyu NPP project, rights or obligations that go beyond its limits."
Erdogan is the ruling alliance's presidential candidate in the election. The opposition has not yet nominated a candidate of its own, which has drawn harsh criticism from the Turkish president's party.
