People's Alliance led by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's Justice and Development Party (AKP) won 323 out of 600 seats in Turkey's new parliament. These final figures were announced Tuesday by the head of the country's Central Election Commission, Ahmet Yener.
"All appeals have been considered, a decision has been made. The final results of the May 14 vote on the composition of the 28th Parliament have been approved by the commission and sent for publication in the official newspaper. The Justice and Development Party got 268 seats, the New Welfare Party - 5, and the Nationalist Movement Party - 50 (these parties are part of the People's Alliance - TASS). The Republican People's Party (CHP) - 169, the Good Party - 43," Yener said on Turkish television.
The Workers' Party of Turkey gets four mandates, while the Party of Greens and the Left Future, whose lists were used to elect candidates from the pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democracy Party, got 61 seats. Yener said the overall turnout in the parliamentary elections was 87.05%, with 53.8% of voters abroad interested in voting.
The CHP and the Good Party are part of the opposition Nation Alliance. However, the CHP, despite winning 169 mandates, will not be able to give them all only to its functionaries, because candidates from four other parties ran on its lists. The CHP faction is expected to have about 120 members.
According to the law, a session of this legislative body is held on the third day after the official final results of the parliamentary elections are published. The agenda includes taking the oath by all deputies. Thus, the general assembly of parliament is expected to convene on June 2.
