The heads of state and government of the European Union call on Turkey to stop intervening in the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh and start playing a constructive role in the de-escalation of the situation. This was stated by Charles Michelle, head of the European Council, at a press conference on Friday after the first day of the EU summit in Brussels.

"Yes, everyone should play a more constructive role to promote de-escalation. We want external interference to stop, it complicates the situation," he said, answering the journalists' question as French President Emmanuelle Macron reported on the fact of Syrian militants being transported to Karabakh via Turkey upon arrival at the summit.

According to the summit statement, "The European Council calls for an immediate cessation of hostilities and urges the parties to recommit to a durable ceasefire and a peaceful settlement of the conflict.

"The loss of life and civilian casualties are unacceptable. There can be neither a military solution to the conflict nor any outside interference. Azerbaijan and Armenia must start substantive negotiations without preconditions. The European Council expresses its support to the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs and asks the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy (Josep Borrell - TASS) to explore further EU support to the settlement process," the document notes.
