The European Union has recently expanded its sanctions against Iran, adding six individuals and five organizations to its blacklist. The EU alleges that Iran has provided military assistance to Russia in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
According to the Official Journal of the EU, the decision is based on claims that "Russia uses Iranian-made UAVs" in its military operation in Ukraine, leading to the imposition of sanctions on Iran.
The blacklist targets Iranian companies involved in the development and production of UAV components, as well as key figures in their management and scientific experts.
The EU's move follows accusations that Russia has employed drones supplied by Iran in the Ukrainian conflict. Despite consistent denials from Moscow and Tehran, the EU continues to assert its position. Notably, Russian Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov has dismissed these claims, labeling them as fabrications. He emphasized that the Russian military relies on domestically produced aircraft. In November 2022, Iran's foreign minister did acknowledge supplying drones to Russia but underscored the small quantities and the timeframe preceding the start of the special military operation in Ukraine.
