EU intends to impose sanctions on Iranian organizations for allegedly supporting Russia

15 February 2023

The European Union (EU) intends to impose sanctions against Iranian organizations, which, according to the association, support Russia's actions in Ukraine, President of the European Commission (EC) Ursula von der Leyen said  on Wednesday at a plenary session of the European Parliament (EP) in Strasbourg, broadcast by EC services.

"But there are also hundreds of Iranian-made drones that Russia uses on the battlefields in Ukraine. <...> So for the first time we also propose to impose sanctions against Iranian organizations, including those associated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps," she said.

According to von der Leyen, "it is EU's duty to impose sanctions on them and confront Iran over delivering drones and transferring technical information to build production sites in Russia."

Moscow and Tehran have repeatedly rejected claims of Iranian drones being supplied to Russia for use in Ukraine. Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov called such reports fake and stressed that the Russian army uses domestically produced drones. In early November 2022, the head of the Iranian foreign ministry said that the Islamic republic had supplied drones to Russia, but in small quantities and a few months before the start of the military operation in Ukraine.
