EU leaders extend economic sanctions against Russia for six months

19 June 2020

The heads of state and government of the European Union at an online summit made a political decision to extend for six months the economic sanctions against Russia, which expire on July 31. This was reported to the TASS correspondent on Friday by a source in the delegation of one of the countries of the community.

"The leaders agreed to extend the sanctions for another six months," he said.

According to the diplomat, this decision came after German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron informed the other leaders about the implementation of the Minsk agreements to resolve the conflict in Ukraine. "As you know, restrictive measures against Russia are linked to the implementation of the Minsk agreements. The leaders came to the conclusion that there was no significant progress in this process, and therefore it was decided to extend the sanctions," he explained.

In 2014, the European Union imposed sanctions on Russia in connection with the events in Ukraine and the reunification of Crimea with Russia. Restrictive measures have been extended several times. Negotiations on a visa-free regime and a new basic cooperation agreement were suspended, Russian officials were banned from entering EU countries and their assets were frozen, and trade, financial and military restrictions were imposed. In response, Russia imposed a ban on imports from the European Union of a number of food products.
