EU warned of new migration crisis in Syria

A new migration crisis is brewing in Syria, a humanitarian disaster is provoked by the United States and its satellites, said the authorities of Syria and Russia on the eve of a summit of the European Union.

According to a joint statement of the heads of the coordination headquarters for the return of refugees, Mikhail Mizintsev and Hussein Makhluf, the United States and its allies are pursuing a policy of harsh restrictive measures against the people of Syria for the "economic suffocation of the country" and its isolation in the international arena.

The dire economic situation leads to a slowdown in the return of refugees to Syria.

"At the same time, the damage inflicted by the Americans and their satellites on the Syrian state leads to a humanitarian catastrophe that could cause a new migration crisis. According to the International Committee of the Red Cross, the number of Syrian citizens in need of assistance has now increased, and the US and Western countries do not accept responsibility for this catastrophe," the document notes.

It stressed that "it is of serious concern" that this state of affairs has taken place on the eve of the EU summit in Brussels. The forum is being held without the participation of representatives of the SAR government and "in fact, it is being used as a platform for working out the next sanctions restrictions".

"At the same time, European Union representatives, while continuing to state their commitment to the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Syrian state, "turn a blind eye" to the illegal occupation of its territory and looting of national wealth carried out by the United States and its allies," the statement reads.

After the 2015 migration crisis, caused by a sharp increase in the flow of migrants to the EU from the Middle East, Africa, and other regions, the EU concluded an agreement with Turkey to stem the flow of illegal immigrants to Europe from that country.

Under the agreement, the EU provided financial assistance to Turkey, which hosts the largest number of refugees, primarily from neighboring Syria. Turkey also pledged to accept illegal migrants entering the EU from its territory, particularly Greece. At the same time, the EU has agreed to accept legal Syrian migrants.

In mid-March, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell announced that the EU intended to update the agreement on migration with Turkey. Ankara has repeatedly threatened the EU with new waves of refugees if its demands for economic aid are not met.
