Europe sent humanitarian aid to Iran for the first time to fight coronavirus

02 April 2020

Germany, France and the United Kingdom sent the first batch of medical equipment to fight coronavirus in Iran. In particular, the Islamic Republic received laboratory tests for coronavirus, medical equipment and personal protective equipment.

It is noteworthy that the humanitarian cargo was sent to Iran in circumvention of the US sanctions. To do this, they used Instrument in Support of Trade Exchanges (INSTEX) developed in the EU in 2019, which provides for transactions that are not related to the dollar and the SWIFT banking transaction system controlled by the US.

Thus, European companies cooperating with Tehran can be removed from the risk of falling under the US sanctions.

The German Foreign Ministry has already announced that new deliveries are currently being planned to Iran, which has been significantly affected by the coronavirus.

The number of cases of coronavirus infection in Iran has exceeded 50 thousand, more than three thousand people died.
