31 January 2020

The exhibition "Sufism without borders. The Naqshbandi Sheikh Ahmed Gumushkhanewi and his manuscripts" dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the establishment of Russian-Turkish diplomatic relations has opened at the State Museum of Oriental Art in Moscow.

Ahmed Ziauddin Gumushkhanewi, according to "Vestnik Kavkaza", was one of the most famous and outstanding Sufi sheikhs who lived in the second half of the XIX century in the Ottoman Empire. He had four libraries, each of which had several thousand volumes of books.

For many years, it was believed that all of his legacies were lost during the First World War, but some time ago, several dozen manuscripts with the personal seal of the Sheikh were found in Moscow state collections and private collections.

The exhibition includes about 30 manuscripts; most of them belong to the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Talking about the relevance of the exhibition, Scientific Director of the Institute of Oriental studies, member of the GSV "Russia – Islamic world" Vitaly Naumkin noted that the manuscripts are of great value to the Islamic heritage to the Muslims, including Russian Muslim Ummah.

The exhibition will work until February 26.
