Expert: Recent Developments in Bangladesh Will Not Impact Relations with Russia

09 August

The recent political upheaval in Bangladesh will not alter the strong relationship between Moscow and Dhaka, according to Kirill Babaev, Director of the Center for International Projects at the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation and Head of the Institute of China and Modern Asia at the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Babaev assured that the events in Bangladesh will not affect the positive and constructive nature of Russia-Bangladesh relations. “There are no critical issues in our relations that would hinder their development,” he said. He added that despite not being the most active political partners, Russia and Bangladesh have maintained a stable and positive partnership for many years.

Babaev also commented on the appointment of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus as head of Bangladesh's interim government. He highlighted Yunus's longstanding positive attitude towards Russia and noted that Yunus had previously interacted with the Financial University and agreed to chair an International Advisory Council established this year.

“There has been no indication from the new Bangladeshi authorities that they will alter their foreign policy towards Russia,” Babaev said. He also mentioned the possibility of Yunus visiting Russia in November for the advisory council meeting, depending on his status as interim head of government.

Yunus took over as interim head of government following the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina amid widespread protests. The interim government will lead until parliamentary elections are scheduled, expected within the next three months.
