Experts discussed the contribution of Soviet diplomats to the development of relations with the Arab world

Today, the international video-conference "At the origins of modern diplomatic relations with the Islamic world: the life and fate of Karim Khakimov and Nazir Torekulov", organized by the Permanent Mission of Russia to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in cooperation with the Russian Embassy in Saudi Arabia and the Group of strategic vision "Russia-Islamic world", as well as the Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, took place. The event was dedicated to the 15th anniversary of the Russian Federation's accession to the Organization of the Islamic Conference as an observer country.

The discussion was attended by Ramazan Abdulatipov, Russia's Permanent Representative to the OIC, Farit Mukhametshin, Deputy Chairman of the GSV "Russia-Islamic world", Radiy Khabirov, head of the Republic of Bashkortostan, Askar Musinov, Deputy Secretary-General of the OIC, and other well-known experts.


Welcoming the participants, Ramazan Abdulatipov noted that the outstanding Soviet diplomats Karim Khakimov and Nazir Torekulov were, in fact, the first representatives of the Soviet Union in the Arab world and made a significant contribution to the development of relations between the USSR and Arab countries.


The influence that the Soviet Union had in the Arab world, including thanks to them, must be restored, the Russian Representative to the OIC stressed.


Now, according to Abdulatipov, the Russian authorities and President Vladimir Putin, in particular, are doing a lot in this direction.
Deputy Chairman of the GSV Farit Mukhametshin, commenting on the choice of the theme of the conference, stressed that the study of history, including the period of formation of the Soviet state, is one of the areas of the Group of strategic vision  "Russia – Islamic world".

Farit Mukhametshin noted that Karim Khakimov and Nazir Torekulov were the first heads of Soviet diplomatic missions who worked in a number of countries in the Arab world. They left a bright mark not only in the history of Russian diplomacy, but also in the formation of the country's foreign policy and national policy.


During his speech, Deputy Secretary-General of the OIC, Askar Musinov, said that the Organization proposed to create a Fund to support students from the Islamic world.


At the moment, according to him, not enough has been done in this direction. Ramazan Abdulatipov expressed support for this initiative, saying that he intends to discuss this issue in Moscow in the near future.


The Deputy Chairman of the Group, Farit Mukhametshin, made a proposal to consider the issue of granting scholarships to students from Muslim countries through the GSV  "Russia – Islamic world". He also said that this possibility would be discussed separately.
The participants of the conference agreed that the conference should publish a book about Khakimov and Torekulov, who made a significant contribution to the development of relations between the USSR and Saudi Arabia and the Arab world as a whole. The Saudi side was also invited to participate in the publication of the book.


Karim Khakimov is a Soviet diplomat, the first Plenipotentiary representative of Soviet Russia in the Arab countries, who made a significant contribution to the establishment of good relations between the new Soviet Republic and the Arab-Persian world.


Nazir Torekulov is a Soviet party and statesman, diplomat, representative of the USSR in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (1928-1936), publicist, philologist.
