The first cargo shipment from Russia to Saudi Arabia has successfully traversed the transportation corridor that passes through Iran's territory. This development was reported by the Tasnim news agency, citing Miad Salehi, the Managing Director of the Iranian Railways Company, which oversees Iran's rail network.
As Salehi explained, the transit train, comprising 36 cargo containers, entered Iran via the Incheh Borun border crossing. After completing all necessary customs procedures, the train continued its journey to the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas. The cargo's ultimate destination is Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
The creation of the North-South multimodal transport corridor was established through an intergovernmental agreement signed by Russia, India, and Iran in the year 2000. This project aims to facilitate the transit of cargo from India, Iran, and Persian Gulf countries through Russia to Europe. Compared to the sea route through the Suez Canal, this corridor significantly reduces both the distance and associated transportation time and costs. The project currently integrates various transportation systems of the participating states. India has invested approximately $2.1 billion into this initiative, with a portion of the investment going towards the construction of transportation infrastructure in Iran.
