Foreign Ministers of China, Egypt, and Jordan Discuss Middle East Escalation

07 August

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held separate telephone conversations with Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel-Aty and Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Hussein Abdullah al-Safadi to discuss the escalating situation in the Middle East, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

In his discussion with Badr Abdel-Aty, Wang Yi highlighted the dangers posed by the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the head of the Hamas politburo. Wang stated that the assassination violates fundamental UN Charter principles, undermines regional peace efforts, and makes a ceasefire in Gaza increasingly elusive.

Wang Yi condemned the killing of Haniyeh and noted that the Gaza conflict, now under intense international scrutiny, risks leading to a severe humanitarian disaster.

During his conversation with al-Safadi, Wang described Haniyeh’s assassination as a "breach of diplomatic norms that exacerbates regional tensions." He stressed the need for unified international action to achieve a comprehensive ceasefire in Gaza as soon as possible.

Wang Yi called for a collective international response and affirmed China’s commitment to support Arab countries in efforts to end the conflict, prevent further escalation, and facilitate a swift resolution to the Middle East crisis.

On July 31, Hamas reported that Haniyeh was killed in an Israeli strike on his residence in Tehran. The attack occurred while he was in Iran for the inauguration of President-elect Massoud Pezeshkian. Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has vowed severe retaliation against Israel for the killing.
