The holding of the inter-Afghan meeting in Doha may be called progress in the current realities, said Zamir Kabulov, Special Representative of the Russian President and Head of the Second Asian Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry, to RIA Novosti.
"Judging by their draft joint statement, they have agreed to negotiate. There is nothing to assess yet. Negotiations have not started. But it is good that they have agreed to negotiate. But what can you do? In the current Afghan realities even this is small but progress," said Kabulov.
A new two-day round of intra-Afghan negotiations was held in Qatar, where the sides failed to agree even on a brief ceasefire or the release of prisoners, as observers had expected before the talks began. The delegations nevertheless declared their intention to reach a compromise in the interests of all Afghans on the basis of Islamic principles, according to the communiqué of the negotiations, which was read out at a press conference by Abdullah Abdullah, the head of the government delegation and the Supreme Council for National Reconciliation.
