Foreign Ministry comments on Iran nuclear deal talks

22 April 2021

Moscow is satisfied with efforts to reanimate the JCPOA on Iran's nuclear program at talks in Vienna, which aim to restore the deal as soon as possible, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said.

"We are generally satisfied with the way the work on resuscitating the JCPOA is moving forward in consultations by the current countries participating in the plan and US representatives," Zakharova said at a briefing.

She said that the question of revising the JCPOA was not being taken up in the negotiations, which was an acknowledgment that there was no alternative to the deal.

The commission on the nuclear deal has been holding regular face-to-face meetings in Vienna for weeks, with informal meetings in various formats in between. On Tuesday, there was another meeting at the level of political directors. So far, three expert working groups have been set up, two of which - on the lifting of US sanctions against Iran and on the nuclear issue - are searching for concrete steps to be taken by Tehran and Washington to fully restore the nuclear deal. The task of the third expert group is to agree on the sequence of these steps.
