Moscow urges the opposing sides in Afghanistan to reduce violence and switch to negotiations, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said.

"Amid the impasse over technical issues during national reconciliation talks, in Afghanistan, there is an increase in violence. The fighting is taking place in a large part of the country," Zakharova said at the briefing.

She recalled that last week the situation in the south in Helmand province escalated, the military and political situation is difficult in other parts of the country, and civilians are dying.

"We call on the opposing Afghan sides to reduce violence and focus on the negotiation process. We expect that in the very near future the delegation of official Kabul and the Taliban movement, which are in Doha, will come to a consensus on controversial procedural issues and start discussing the key points of the national reconciliation agenda," said the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
