05 September

The number of serious criminal charges against former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been steadily rising, now exceeding 120, according to the Bangladeshi newspaper The Daily Observer.

The report states that 122 cases have been filed against the former prime minister across the country, with 111 of these cases related to murder. The investigations pertain to incidents during the mass protest movement, where clashes between protesters, security forces, political leaders, and activists led to numerous deaths. Sheikh Hasina also faces accusations of kidnapping, crimes against humanity, and genocide.

Similar charges have been brought against several other high-ranking officials, including former Foreign Minister Hassan Mahmoud, former Interior Minister Asaduzzaman Khan, and Justice Ministry chief Anisur Rahman. Among the accused are Sheikh Hasina's sister, former government head Sheikh Rehan, her son Sajib Wazed Joy, and her daughter Saima Wazed.

The charges allege that between July 15 and August 5, indiscriminate firing, ordered by Sheikh Hasina and other Awami League leaders and activists, resulted in significant casualties.
