G20 Leaders Advocate for UN Security Council Reform

19 November

Leaders of the Group of Twenty (G20) have called for reforming the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), as outlined in the final declaration of the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro.

The declaration, published on the G20 website, underscores the need to strengthen the role of the UN General Assembly as a “primary deliberative, legislative, and representative body” for maintaining international peace and security. This would involve fostering more robust collaboration with the Security Council.

The leaders emphasized that the reform should align with “the demands and realities of the 21st century,” making the UNSC more representative, inclusive, effective, efficient, democratic, and transparent for all UN member states. They also called for an expansion of the council to increase representation from Africa, the Asia-Pacific region, Latin America, and the Caribbean.

Additionally, the G20 leaders expressed support for enhancing the role of the UN Economic and Social Council.

Previously, UN Secretary-General António Guterres acknowledged that most UN member states recognize the need for Security Council reform. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has also advocated for expanding the council’s membership to include more representatives from Asia, Africa, and Latin America, rather than adding Western states.
