Switzerland plans to hold a conference in March 2025 in Geneva, at the request of the UN General Assembly, focusing on the protection of civilians in Israeli-occupied Palestinian territories, as announced by the Swiss Federal Council.
“At the UN’s request, Switzerland will organize a Conference of the High Contracting Parties to the Geneva Conventions on the protection of civilians in the occupied Palestinian territories,” the statement read. The conference is scheduled for March 2025 in Geneva, and on November 13, 2024, the Federal Council was informed of the ongoing preparations, with Switzerland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs responsible for organizing the event.
On September 19, the Swiss Foreign Ministry reported that the UN General Assembly had tasked Switzerland, as the depository of the Geneva Conventions, with organizing this conference to address “measures for the protection of civilians in occupied Palestinian territories.”
On September 18, the UN General Assembly voted in favor of a resolution proposed by Palestine, urging Israel to comply with the International Court of Justice’s decision to withdraw from the occupied Palestinian territories within one year.
