UN Secretary-General António Guterres has expressed concern over a series of blasts in Afghanistan that killed and injured more than 250 people this month, the statement issued Thursday by Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesman of the UN Secretary-General, reads.
"The UN Secretary-General expresses deep concern over a series of blasts in Afghanistan that killed and injured more than 250 people, including children, this month," the text reads.
As the statement noted, the UN secretary-general "strongly condemns the latest attack" on August 17 on a mosque in Kabul. He expressed his deepest condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to the wounded.
At least 20 people were killed and 40 others wounded in Wednesday's bombing of a mosque in northeast Kabul, Al Jazeera television reported Wednesday, citing a source in the Afghan security forces.
In recent months, a series of blasts, armed attacks and shootings have hit a number of provinces in Afghanistan, including the capital region, targeting both supporters of the Taliban (banned in the Russian Federation) that has seized power in the country, as well as civilians. Many of these incidents were claimed by the Islamic State of Khorasan, an offshoot of the Islamic State terrorist organization banned in the Russian Federation.
