Gerasimov: Russian military in Karabakh focused on restoration of peaceful life

09 December 2021

Russian servicemen within the framework of the peacekeeping operation on the territory of Nagorno-Karabakh are now focused on the return of prisoners, implementation of infrastructure projects and other humanitarian tasks, said Valery Gerasimov, chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces.

"In addition to controlling the ceasefire and all military activities, the efforts of our peacekeepers are focused on restoring peaceful life in the region, while successfully solving humanitarian tasks," Gerasimov said Thursday at a briefing to military attachés of foreign countries.

He called "demining terrain and facilities, the return of prisoners of war and detainees, the search for dead bodies, ensuring the security of the delivery of humanitarian goods and the implementation of infrastructure projects" main tasks.

"The Russian Armed Forces continue to carry out peacekeeping tasks in Nagorno-Karabakh. More than a year ago, they managed to stop the bloody war and create conditions for the restoration of peace in the region. In order to reduce tension and observe the ceasefire regime, Russian peacekeepers have organized duty at observation posts and patrolling of the area of the peacekeeping operation," Gerasimov said.

He also reminded that "a joint Russian-Turkish center has been functioning in the Agdam district of Azerbaijan since January of this year in order to control the ceasefire and all military operations".
