German Chancellor Angela Merkel stressed that political changes in Syria are important for the formation of conditions for refugees to return home.
According to her, one of the items on the agenda of talks with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres was the activities of the UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen in relation to the Constitutional Committee of Syria.
"We need political changes in Syria, we need to work on a new Constitution, because only in this way can we guarantee the creation in Syria of conditions for refugees from Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey and possibly from Germany to return back to Syria," Merkel said during a joint press conference with Guterres. - "Today there are no such conditions. Therefore, I thank the UN for these efforts."
In addition, the Chancellor also noted the importance of the Libyan peace process and supported the UN efforts in this direction. "We hope to contribute to the political stabilization of Libya," German Chancellor said.
