Group of Caspian Flotilla took to the sea for naval drills

At least 20 warships and supply vessels of the Caspian Flotilla have put to the sea from Makhachkala to take part in large-scale exercises, the press service of the Southern Military District (SMD) told reporters on Thursday.


"A mixed group of the Caspian Flotilla's naval troops sailed from Makhachkala's permanent disposition base to a designated location of the Caspian Sea to take part in a planned command and staff exercise. <...>Crews of about 20 combat ships of the flotilla, including the missile ship Dagestan, small missile ships Grad Sviyazhsk, Uglich, Velikiy Ustyug, Makhachkala, Astrakhan, Stupinets, small artillery ships, base sweepers, launches and supply vessels are taking part in the ship command and staff exercise," the statement says.


Military seamen will have to perform a number of training and combat tasks in difficult conditions and act on various inputs coming from the flotilla command post, the press service noted. In the open sea, the crews of artillery boats and sweepers will work off tasks of mine support, deployment of forces of the flotilla and the anti-submarine sabotage defense at anchorage. Moreover, seamen will search for mines and practice their elimination with the performance of live shooting.


According to the press service, in the near future, naval tactical groups will have to repel an air attack of a conventional enemy and fight a sea trial and carry out practical missile and artillery firing.


In January and February of this year, the Russian Navy is conducting a series of exercises. Seamen train in actions for the protection of Russian interests in the world's oceans and counteraction to military threats of Russia to the sea and the ocean. More than 140 warships and supply vessels, more than 60 aircraft, 1 thousand units of military equipment and about 10 thousand servicemen were involved in training exercises in all fleets.
