The Republic of Guinea has become the second country in Africa to register a Russian vaccine against the coronavirus Sputnik V under an accelerated procedure, the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) said in a statement.

"The RDIF announces the registration of a Russian Sputnik V coronavirus vaccine by the National Directorate of Pharmacy and Medicines of the Republic of Guinea. Guinea became the second country in Africa to approve the use of the Sputnik V vaccine," the fund noted.

The vaccine is registered under an emergency use authorization based on data from clinical trials of Sputnik V in Russia.

Sputnik V is also registered in Russia, Belarus, Argentina, Bolivia, Serbia, Algeria, Palestine, Venezuela, Paraguay, Turkmenistan, Hungary and the UAE. Earlier, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said during a visit to Moscow that the Russian vaccine Sputnik V had been successfully registered in Iran.

"The high safety and efficacy rates make Sputnik V one of the most sought-after vaccines against coronavirus on all continents. The drug is based on a well-studied human adenovirus vector platform and is highly trusted by our partners in the Republic of Guinea. The President of the Republic of Alpha Conde was vaccinated with the Sputnik V vaccine," said Kirill Dmitriev, the head of the RDIF. He also added that the fund is ready to support the Republic of Guinea in the fight against the pandemic.

The Russian Ministry of Health registered the Sputnik V vaccine in August 2020; it was developed by the Gamaleya Research Center. This vaccine was the first in the world to prevent COVID-19. Sputnik V is based on a studied and validated human adenoviral vector platform whose important advantages are safety, efficacy and no long-term adverse effects. The efficacy of Sputnik V is above 90% and the vaccine provides complete protection against severe cases of coronavirus.
