Guinea's Leader Says Africa Suffers from Western-Imposed Models of Governance

22 September 2023

Guinea's transitional president, Mamadi Doumbouya, conveyed his perspective during his address at the 78th session of the UN General Assembly, asserting that African nations are grappling with governance models enforced upon them by Western nations.

"Africa is burdened by a governance model that has been imposed upon it, one that may have proven effective for the Western world given its historical context, but is challenging to adapt to our unique realities, customs, and environment," he remarked. Doumbouya contended that the democratic model, which has been subtly and adeptly enforced by Western powers in Guinea and other African nations, "falls short in practice."

Doumbouya highlighted the surge in coups across Africa, a trend the international community has sought to denounce. Nevertheless, the Guinean leader argued that "the real culprits behind these disruptions are not those who take up arms, but rather individuals in high-ranking positions who manipulate the rules to cling to power."

The transitional president urged the international community to move beyond mere condemnation and delve into the root causes that have led to these coups. He emphasized that African nations are capable of determining their own priorities and developing governance models that align with their unique circumstances and the needs of their populations. Doumbouya also expressed that African countries would greatly appreciate it if Western powers allowed them the autonomy to chart their own course.

The 78th session of the UN General Assembly officially commenced on September 5 in New York. The high-level week, beginning on September 19, featured the participation of leaders and foreign ministers from around the world. The Russian delegation was led by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

On September 5, 2021, Colonel Mamadi Doumbouya, commander of Guinea's elite Special Forces unit, announced the seizure of power and the detention of President Alpha Condé. The rebels suspended the constitution and established governing bodies for the country. In October 2021, Doumbouya was inaugurated as Guinea's transitional president. An agreement was reached between the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and Guinea's military authorities stipulating the transfer of power to civilian institutions by the end of 2024.
