The world community must do all it can to achieve a negotiated solution to the crisis in Syria on the basis of UN Security Council Resolution 2254, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said in a statement issued Friday.

"We must demonstrate a willingness and determination to move beyond the rhetoric of commitment to peace and do whatever is necessary to achieve a negotiated political solution within the framework of UN Security Council Resolution 2254," Guterres said. - "This is the path to a solution that meets the aspirations of all Syrians, creates the necessary conditions for the safe return of refugees, confronts terrorism and preserves Syrian sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence".

The UN secretary-general called for humanitarian access throughout the Arab republic. The cross-border assistance mechanism is critical for millions of people in need, he said.

"I call on the Security Council to support the consensus in updating resolution 2585 in July [on cross-border humanitarian assistance]," the administrative head of the world community said.
