Hamas Accuses Palestinian National Authority of Reluctance to Form a Unified Palestinian Government

29 January

The Palestinian movement Hamas has accused the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) of being unwilling to create a unified Palestinian government or an assistance committee for the Gaza Strip. This statement was made by Mohammed Derwish, head of Hamas's consultative body, the Shura Council.

"The PNA refuses to form a Government of National Unity or a committee to assist Gaza, while we need to unite our efforts to achieve common goals," Derwish stated. His remarks were published on Hamas's Telegram channel. The PNA has not yet commented on this accusation.

Negotiations about post-war governance in Gaza between Hamas and Fatah have been ongoing, with the latest round taking place in Cairo from November 2 to 4. According to Hamas representatives, the parties discussed creating a temporary body responsible for managing the Gaza Strip until a unified Palestinian government of national consensus is formed. This structure has been named the "Public Support Committee." Egyptian sources claim that this body was established by decree of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and includes independent representatives who are natives of Gaza but do not belong to any political party.

In 2005, Israel, as part of its unilateral disengagement plan, completely withdrew its troops from the Gaza Strip and evacuated Jewish settlements there. Subsequently, control over Gaza was transferred to the PNA led by Abbas, which also governed the West Bank. However, in the first Palestinian parliamentary elections, Hamas emerged victorious and entered into confrontation with the more moderate Fatah, leading to a split between the factions. Hamas gained full control over the Gaza Strip, while their opponents retained power in the West Bank. Recently, Abbas and his supporters have repeatedly expressed their desire to restore PNA jurisdiction over Gaza, but Hamas has not agreed to this so far.
