Hamas Accuses Red Sea Coalition Countries of Complicity in the Gaza War

21 December 2023

The Palestinian movement Hamas views the countries expressing intent to join the international coalition established by the US to secure navigation safety in the Red Sea as accomplices in crimes against the Palestinian people. They urge these countries to reconsider their decision, as stated by Osama Hamdan, a member of the movement's leadership.

"In regard to the coalition members, they should rethink their decision, which amounts to open complicity in the occupation war and the atrocities against our Palestinian people in Gaza, including the massacres," Hamdan was quoted as saying in Hamas' Telegram channel.

After the escalation of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict in the Gaza Strip, Yemen's Ansar Allah rebel movement declared its intention to strike Israeli territory and block associated ships from passing through the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait until the operation in the Palestinian enclave ceased. Since mid-November, several commercial and military vessels in the Red Sea have been targeted from Ansar Allah-controlled territory. Additionally, Yemeni rebels seized the cargo ship Galaxy Leader with over 20 crew members onboard.

In response to Ansar Allah's actions, US authorities announced the formation of an international coalition and the planning of an operation to ensure freedom of navigation and protect ships in the Red Sea. Participating in the operation are Bahrain, Great Britain, Denmark, Spain, Italy, Canada, the Netherlands, Norway, Seychelles, and France. In turn, the movement's spokesman, Mohammed Abdel Salam, informed TASS that the creation of the coalition would not sway Ansar Allah's decision to attack commercial ships associated with Israel.
