The Palestinian movements Hamas and Islamic Jihad have blamed Israel for the breakdown of a ceasefire agreement after negotiations took place in Qatar.
In a joint statement released by Lebanese TV channel Al Mayadeen, Hamas and Islamic Jihad asserted, "The leadership of Hamas and Islamic Jihad hold the leaders of the [Israeli] occupation responsible for the breakdown of the ceasefire talks and the refusal to recognize the results achieved in previous stages."
These ceasefire talks, aimed at ending the conflict in the Gaza Strip and addressing the release of hostages, began in Doha on August 15. A joint statement from Egypt, Qatar, and the US noted that the discussions were held in a positive atmosphere. The US, with support from Qatar and Egypt, presented a proposal intended to bridge the differences between Hamas and Israel. However, Hamas criticized the American initiative, claiming it only served Israel's interests.
The mediators agreed to hold the next meeting in Cairo before the end of the week. It was also noted that technical groups would continue to develop mechanisms for implementing key points of the agreement, including the exchange of hostages held in Gaza for Palestinians detained in Israeli prisons and addressing the humanitarian situation in the enclave.
