Hamas Condemns Countries Opposing Russian Draft Resolution on UN Security Council's Conflict Resolution Efforts

17 October 2023

The Palestinian movement Hamas strongly criticized countries that did not support the Russian-drafted resolution addressing the Palestinian-Israeli conflict in the UN Security Council.

"We strongly condemn the countries that voted against the Russian draft resolution in the Security Council, which calls for a ceasefire to open humanitarian corridors and save civilian lives," the statement declared. Izzat al-Rishq, a member of the movement's press office, underscored, "Hamas deeply appreciates Russia's firm stance on Israeli aggression in Gaza and the draft resolution it has presented to the UN Security Council."

The movement asserts that "the countries which rejected the draft resolution, aimed at establishing humanitarian corridors, bear responsibility for the ongoing civilian casualties in the Gaza Strip."

Earlier, the UN Security Council failed to adopt the Russian-proposed resolution addressing the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Five countries - Russia, China, UAE, Gabon, Mozambique - supported the document, while six countries - Albania, Brazil, Ghana, Malta, Malta, Switzerland, Ecuador - abstained. Four nations - Great Britain, the USA, France, and Japan - opposed the resolution. Consequently, only the Brazilian version of the resolution remained under consideration by the Security Council. The Russian side introduced two amendments, specifically seeking to condemn indiscriminate strikes on the Gaza Strip and call for a humanitarian ceasefire.

Vasily Nebenzya, Russia's permanent representative to the UN, expressed his deep disappointment with the outcome after the vote. "There is no valid reason to challenge this resolution as it is solely of a humanitarian nature. The only reason it was not adopted is that some Western countries did not wish to support anything originating from Russia," the diplomat asserted.
