Hamas Political Bureau Members Discuss Gaza Agreement with Erdogan

30 January

Members of the political leadership of the Palestinian movement Hamas met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara to discuss a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip. This information was released in a statement published on Hamas's Telegram channel.

"A delegation consisting of Hamas leaders, headed by Mohammed Derwish, Chairman of the Shura Council (the advisory body of the movement - TASS note), met on Wednesday in Ankara with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The sides discussed the implementation of the ceasefire agreement in Gaza and the exchange of hostages, which was brokered by Egypt and Qatar," the document stated. Besides Derwish, other Hamas representatives at the meeting included Khalil al-Hayya, leader of the negotiation team; Khaled Mashal, head of Hamas abroad; Zaher Jabarin, leader of the movement on the West Bank; Mohammed Nasr, member of the political bureau; and Musa Akkari, Hamas representative in Turkey.

Hamas claims that during the meeting, Erdogan promised that Turkey would continue to advocate for Palestinian rights at all levels.

On Wednesday evening, Erdogan's office reported the talks but did not provide additional details about their agenda. From the Turkish side, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and Head of National Intelligence Ibrahim Kalin were present at the meeting.

Previously, a similar Hamas delegation visited Cairo, where they met with the head of Egypt's General Intelligence Directorate, Hassan Mahmoud Rashad, and with Palestinians who had been deported to Egypt after being released from Israeli jails as part of a deal with Israel.
