11 August 2021

Russian Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev  discussed by telephone with Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani interaction in the security sphere and the situation in Afghanistan, the press service of the Russian Security Council reported  on Wednesday.

"Nikolai Patrushev and Ali Shamkhani discussed the topic of continuing Russian-Iranian cooperation in the security sphere, as well as the situation in Afghanistan," the report said.

It was reported that the conversation took place at the initiative of the Iranian side.

The clashes between the government forces of Afghanistan and the Taliban (the Taliban is banned in the Russian Federation) became more intensive after US President Joe Biden announced in April that he decided to finish the operation in Afghanistan. This operation was the longest foreign military campaign in American history. The withdrawal of troops began in May. The White House expects it to be completed by the end of August. Afghan officials have repeatedly reported that the Taliban are ramping up their offensive.
