Head of Syrian Red Crescent urges EU to lift economic sanctions on country

07 February 2023

President of the Syrian Red Crescent Society Khaled Hboubati addressed the international community on Tuesday demanding the international community to lift the economic sanctions imposed on Syria to help the country overcome the aftermath of the earthquake.

"The rescue operation faces many difficulties, the first being the lack of special equipment to rescue people under the rubble, and sanctions are the main obstacle to obtaining them," Al Jazeera quoted the head of the Red Crescent branch as saying. "We demand the lifting of the blockade, we call on the European Union to lift the economic sanctions imposed on Syria to cope with the consequences of the earthquake," Hboubati said. He said the country needs "heavy equipment, ambulances and fire engines to be able to continue rescue operations." "We want to get the necessary equipment to help the victims, and sanctions are blocking that," the humanitarian head said.
