Head of Turkish Defense Ministry Reports Elimination of 150 Terrorists in Syria and Iraq from October 1 to 8

09 October 2023

Turkish Defense Minister Yasar Guler has announced that Turkish military forces have eliminated over 150 members of terrorist organizations in Syria and Iraq during the first week of October.

"Between October 1 and October 8, our Air Force conducted comprehensive operations against terrorist targets in northern Iraq and Syria, resulting in the neutralization of more than 150 terrorists. These operations also led to the destruction of the organizations' facilities and sources of income," stated the defense minister.

He noted that airstrikes took place on October 1, 3, and 4, targeting locations in Northern Iraq, and on October 5, 6, and 8 in Northern Syria. These strikes predominantly hit sites used by the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and its Syrian and Iraqi branches. The minister affirmed that "the targets were successfully and completely destroyed."

Since October 1, operations in Syria and Iraq have resumed with increased intensity following a PKK attack on an Interior Ministry building in Ankara. Some Turkish analysts speculate that Turkey may be preparing for a significant ground operation near its southern borders. To facilitate this, the military possesses a mandate for cross-border operations in Syria and Iraq, and discussions regarding its extension will take place in parliament by the end of October.
