Head of Turkish Ministry of Justice says new constitution should be adopted as soon as possible

03 October 2022

Turkish Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag said on Monday that a new constitution of the republic should be adopted as soon as possible to replace the current constitution approved in 1982 after a military coup in 1980.

"Turkey urgently needs a new constitution. Without it, there can be no new Turkey. With its adoption, we will open a new page in the country's history," the minister said. TRT broadcast his speech.

The head of the Turkish MoJ noted that earlier attempts to prepare a new constitution had been made many times, but they had not yielded results. "Turkey will adopt a new constitution sooner or later. It needs a basic law that will be adopted under democratic conditions and protect everyone's interests," Bozdag said, recalling that previous Turkish constitutions were adopted after military coups.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has repeatedly spoken about the need to adopt a new constitution. In his opinion, the new basic law should be adopted by 2023, when Turkey will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the proclamation of the Republic.
