Heads of CIS special services to discuss fight against international terrorism in Minsk

The participants of the CIS Council of special services and security bodies' heads will discuss the issues of improving cooperation of the CIS countries in the fight against international terrorism and extremism at a meeting in Minsk, the State Security Committee of Belarus reported.


"During the Council [meeting] the parties will discuss improving the efficiency of cooperation and collaboration in the fight against international terrorism and other violent manifestations of extremism," noted in the Belarusian KGB. It was reported that President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko will meet with the heads of the delegations, arrived in Minsk.


The agenda of the meeting also includes the issues of "counteraction to weapons and drugs smuggling, as well as information and psychological impact and distribution of misinformation." In addition, according to the KGB, the Council participants will address "deepening the scientific, technical and informational cooperation in the CIS." The Council will also be attended by the heads of the Executive Committee of the Commonwealth and the CIS Antiterrorist Center.


According to a TASS correspondent, the heads of CIS special services, who had earlier laid flowers at the Victory Monument in the center of Minsk, arrived at the residence of the Belarusian president, the Palace of Independence.


The Council of Heads of Security Services of the CIS is a body of the CIS Heads of State, established in March 1997 to coordinate and cooperate between security bodies and special services in the fight against international organized crime and other coordinated areas of activity. Members of the Council are the heads of security and special services of the Commonwealth, the Council is chaired by the director of the Russian FSB by mutual decision of the Council members. The meetings are held as needed, but at least twice a year, alternately on the territories of the CIS member states.
