Heads of the UN Security Council P5 stressed the need for humanitarian aid to Afghanistan

The foreign ministers of the permanent members of the UN Security Council (Russia, Great Britain, China, the US and France) emphasized the urgent need for uninterrupted humanitarian aid to Afghanistan at a meeting with UN secretary-general António Guterres. This was reported Thursday on the website of the Russian MFA.


"The parties discussed topical issues on the agenda of the Security Council with a focus on the current situation in Afghanistan. The participants of the talks stressed the urgent need to provide uninterrupted humanitarian assistance to the IRA [Islamic Republic of Afghanistan] and refugee-recipient countries, the inadmissibility of the spread of terrorist and drug threats in the region," the statement said.


It was reported that Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov emphasized at the meeting the imperative to search for collective responses to the challenges and threats of our time with the support of the UN charter and other norms of international law. The head of the ministry also stressed that the permanent members of the Security Council have a special responsibility to the entire world community in this regard.


The day before the ministers arrived in New York to participate in the high-level week of the UN General Assembly.


The Russian delegation is headed by Sergey Lavrov.
