Health Minister of Lebanon called the situation in Beirut catastrophic

05 August 2020

Lebanese Health Minister Hamad Hassan said that after the explosion in the port of Beirut, hospitals in and around the capital are overflowing with injured people, and doctors are running out of medical supplies.

"To date, we have data on four thousand victims, many of whom still have not received medical care due to the lack of places in hospitals both in the capital and abroad, because they are overflowing with the wounded," Hassan told Sky News Arabia.

According to the Minister, yesterday's explosion completely destroyed four hospitals in the capital, which is why the patients who were in them had to be placed in other hospitals. This, Hassan stressed, further aggravated the problem, turning "the crisis into an epidemiological disaster."

The Lebanese official also added that the situation with the wounded was significantly complicated by the spread of the coronavirus infection in the country. Assessing the current state of affairs, Hassan described it as "a disaster in the full sense of the word."

A powerful explosion occurred near the port of Beirut on Tuesday evening. According to the authorities, the cause was improper storage of 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate, half of the city's buildings were damaged, and hospitals were overcrowded due to a large number of victims. The government of Lebanon has declared three days of mourning for the victims of the tragedy. According to the latest data, more than 100 people were killed and about 4,000 injured. Many people are still missing.
