Honorary Consul Proposes Opening Branch of Russian House in Chittagong, Bangladesh

08 September 2023

Honorary Consul of Russia in Chittagong Ashik Imran said that the residents of Chittagong in Bangladesh have a keen interest in Russia and have requested the establishment of a branch of the Russian House in their city. He conveyed this during a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and representatives of the Bangladeshi Association of Soviet and Russian university graduates at the Russian Embassy in Bangladesh.

"The people of Bangladesh love and support Russia. I want to emphasize this point. They remember the assistance provided by the Soviet Union during the war for Bangladesh's independence in 1971. The younger generation is especially interested in Russia and frequently requests the establishment of a branch of the Russian House in Chittagong," said the honorary consul.

Ashiq Imran also highlighted that Western media frequently disseminate false information about Russia and ongoing events.

He added that Chittagong holds a unique connection with Russia. The city is the resting place of sailor Yuri Repkin, who sacrificed his life during a mission to clear the port of Chittagong in 1972. In honor of this brave sailor, a memorial was unveiled in the city's historic center on February 23, 2022.
