IAEA Director-General expresses desire to enhance cooperation with Iran

07 July 2023

Raphael Grossi, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), has expressed his desire to strengthen cooperation with Iran. Speaking to reporters at the National Press Club after his trip to Japan on Friday, Grossi highlighted that while efforts on the JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action - TASS) are currently stalled, "cooperation with Iran is ongoing but not at the desired level."

Grossi conveyed his position to the Iranian side, emphasizing that the implementation of agreements between the IAEA and Iran has been progressing slowly. He stressed that the agency is working to accelerate the implementation of these agreements to prevent escalating tensions in the region.

During his visit to Tehran in March 2023, Grossi held discussions with Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi. The IAEA head expressed satisfaction with the joint measures developed during the visit, which aimed to establish cooperation between the Islamic Republic and the agency.

The JCPOA, signed in 2015 by the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany, aimed to resolve the crisis surrounding Iran's nuclear program. While economic and financial sanctions related to Iran's nuclear program were lifted by the EU following the agreement, certain restrictions regarding missile technology, specific nuclear activities, and computer software remained in place. Former US President Donald Trump decided to withdraw from the agreement in 2018.
